说到英文演讲，大家首先想到的是什么？

　　慷慨激昂的文字？滔滔不绝的论述？震慑人心的金句？

　　但是你知道吗？人类历史上最伟大的演讲，只有区区274个字 —— 它就是葛底斯堡演说，美国历史上最伟大，为人引用最多的演说。这场伟大的演说发生在1863年美国南北战争期间，来自美国总统亚伯拉罕·林肯。

　　Four score and seen years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceied in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

　　八十七年前，我们的先辈们在这个大陆上给我们带来了一个新的共和国，她受孕于自由的理念，并献身于一切人生来平等的理想。

　　Now we are engaged in a great ciil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceied and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We hae come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gae their lies that nation might lie. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

　　But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate -- we cannot consecrate -- we cannot hallow -- this ground. The brae men, liing and dead, who struggled here, hae consecrated it, far aboe our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can neer forget what they did here. It is for us the liing, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here hae thus far so nobly adanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased deotion to that cause for which they gae the last full measure of deotion -- that we here highly resole that these dead shall not hae died in ain -- that this nation, under God, shall hae a new birth of freedom -- and that goernment of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

　　其实，不论古今中外，不论战争和平，不论男女老幼，人们从演说中领会的，从来不是，或者至少不仅仅是华丽的辞藻。一个成功的演讲者，哪怕用最朴实的语言，最直白的文字，也能直击听众的内心。
